The only thing hotter than the blazing August sun was Dierks Bentley's Lollapalooza set in Chicago's Grant Park, August 2, 2008. Dierks was the only country artist at the rock festival, which featured headliners Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West, among others. Yet judging by the crowd response, he was definitely not the odd man out. Many of the hundreds gathering at the Bud Light stage were already familiar with his music and after the first couple of songs, it was clear he'd gained some new fans, too.
Show highlights included Dierks' interaction with the women signing his lyrics for the hearing impaired, as well as the star's humble acknowledgement that some music lovers at Lollapalooza might be wondering who he was. In particular, Dierks' had a laugh at one guy sporting a "little white t-shirt" that read, "Who in the hell is Dierks Bentley?! Lollapalooza '08."
Dierks bookended his set with Waylon Jennings' "Lonesome, On'ry & Mean" and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." In between those country classics was a long list of his own hits, including "What Was I Thinkin'," "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do," Come a Little Closer," and "Free And Easy (Down The Road I Go)." By the end of the hour it was clear that Dierks belonged in the same class as the legends he covered.
