April 22, 2008 - George Strait has a history of reaching No. 1 on the country charts. In fact, he's done it 56 times on the country singles chart - more trips to the top than any other artist has ever had in a single format.

His 56th arrival at the summit comes this week with "I Saw God Today," a song about the delivery of a newborn that was selected as the first single from the new Troubadour album.

"To have a No. 1 record is very special, whether it's your first or one of many," says George, GAC's Artist of the Month for April. "'I Saw God Today' is a beautifully written song which reaches very tender places in many people's hearts. I would like to thank Rodney Clawson, Monty Criswell and Wade Kirby and congratulate them on the success of their efforts in writing this great song."

George is up for Entertainer of the Year and Top Male Vocalist in the 43rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards, which air May 18 on CBS from Las Vegas. He's also in the running for Vocal Event of the Year — along with Kenny Chesney — for "Shiftwork."
