BROKEN BRIDGES SOUNDTRACK
Cut by Cut with Randy Scruggs
Acclaimed, Grammy-winning producer and musician Randy Scruggs scored the Paramount Pictures feature film Broken Bridges and co-produced its soundtrack album with the movie's star, Toby Keith. Below, Scruggs discusses putting together the tracks for a film that features music as a core theme.
"Toby had a number of songs ready prior to the start of filming, and we were on a very tight recording schedule," Scruggs says. "We were in the studio within two weeks of the initial call I got about working on the soundtrack, which was really a blessing because there's a real honesty and rawness to the tracks. There was a lot of gut reaction coming from the musicians, and you can really feel that. Seven or eight of these were recorded the first week in the studio, and within a week everyone was in Atlanta for filming."
"Broken Bridges"
Performed by Toby Keith & Lindsey Haun
Writers: Toby Keith/Scotty Emerick
The title track is an incredible song and really a summation of the movie, which is about having to cross the broken bridges in your life. In so many ways, life comes down to a matter of choices, and this song really gives you the image of him on one side and someone he loves on the other.
I have to give Lindsey so much credit for walking into this situation on basically her first day in Nashville. She gets to the studio the first day of recording, knowing she's got to record a duet with Toby. Willie Nelson is there to do his track. Most of the other musicians in the room all know each other. But she came in was such a pro. Beyond her natural gifts, vocal talent and artistic sense, she has a tremendously engaging personality and that really came through in the music. She's paired up with Toby here, and he's got this big sound and tone, and she's about half his size. But she really shows up here.
"Thinkin' 'Bout You"
Performed by Fred Eaglesmith
Track produced by Scott Merritt.
Writer: Fred Eaglesmith
I love this track. It's from one of his individual projects, but it worked so well with what we wanted to bring to scene. You can just tell the way this person is consumed with the though of someone. Her every move, every look. He can't quit thinking about her.
Making a film like this, you spend a lot of time trying to match music with scenes. Sometimes it's temporary music, but even that may stick because your initial reaction to a scene could really work. But there are other parameters, too, like whether you are able to license the music. We a knew a certain amount of the music would be original, but as in most movies, there are instances where a random radio is playing in a car or a market or a bar, and you have to find music that works. We didn't want it all to be from one source.
"Crash Here Tonight"
Performed by Toby Keith
Writer: Toby Keith
This is a stripped-down, acoustic take we recorded of a song that appears on Toby's current album. It's used in the interior part of the movie where he's finding himself surprised at feeling love again and coming to terms with his own emotions and the fear of letting her down. In that mood, we wanted it to be really simple and eloquent in just telling the story. We didn't want any other musical enhancement. The version from Toby's album will appear at the very end of the movie during the credits.
"Broken"
Performed by Lindsey Haun
Writer: Angelo/Angela Lauer/Hillary Lindsey
The first time I heard this song Toby played it for me and I could tell he was really excited. It's a very dynamic song with, a lot of range and emotion. Lindsey just came to the table and delivered. We knew it was going to be a key scene in the movie, and you can really feel the honesty of her performance. Once we say the footage we realized her performance was absolutely one of the highlights of the film At that point, everybody felt it would be an amazing lead off single.
"Along For The Ride"
Performed by Matraca Berg
Track produced by Emory Gordy, Jr.
Writers: Matraca Berg/Sharon Vaughn
This song was put into the movie in temporary form early on. It's got such an uplifting feel, and I actually played on this session so I remembered it. The cut comes from an album she did on Rising Tide. In the scene, it's like an awakening of Lindsey's character. She's sitting in a car with her mom, and the song speaks so strongly to the awakening happening in both their lives.
"Uncloudy Day"
Performed by Willie Nelson, Toby Keith & BeBe Winans
Arrangement by Willie Nelson
This was such a highlight during the recording sessions. Having the three of them in a room together made for some amazing creative spontaneity. It's three unmistakable artists singing a song about hope and the belief that there are good times coming through. And the scene in the movie is really special.
"What's Up With That"
Performed by Scotty Emerick
Writers: Toby Keith/Scotty Emerick
This was recorded during that initial week of sessions. It's a classic, country dancehall song about the ups and downs of the boy-girl relationship. The song is so candid in its way, and speaks to something a lot of people definitely feel early in relationships. It works great for the film in a country bar or dancehall kind of atmosphere.
"High On The Mountain"
Performed by Flynnville Train
Track produced by Richard Young & David Barrick.
Writers: Tommy Bales/Brent Flynn/Brian Flynn/Jeremy Patterson/Wesley Robinson/Richard Young
There's a very emotional scene for Lindsey's character in the film -- basically it's a rape and Toby's character finds out about it. He comes to the location where the guy who did it is, and as Toby's stepping out of the truck to confront the guy this song starts playing. We did some early previews of the film for a few people and you could hear the rumblings going through the audience of "this guy's in trouble." The song just has a macho, country, southern rock sound that works perfectly.
"The Battlefield"
Performed by Sonya Isaacs
Track produced by Vince Gill
Writers: Vince Gill/Sonya Isaacs
This comes from the album Vince produced on Sonya for Lyric Street. I played on this session, too, so I was familiar. The film's director, Steven Goldmann, actually suggested it for this particular scene, which is a funeral service. The loneliness and sorrow are set off by a certain amount of Celtic feel. It's about the acceptance of what life is about, which is both living and dying. Very poignant.
"Cant Go Back"
Performed by Toby Keith
Writer: Toby Keith
Three tracks were recorded after the majority of filming had been completed, and this was one. It's something Toby thought needed to be said. You have to keep moving on. You can't undo what's already been done. Even though you may feel like things are a mess and some of pieces get lost, you have to accept it and pick up from there. This is a very personal statement for that film and scene.
"The Waiting Game"
Performed by Poor Richard's Hound
Writers: Toby Keith/Scotty Emerick/Dean Dillon
This song's an instrumental and we weren't sure if we should list an artist or a group, or if it should just go nameless. Toby said this needs to be listed as Poor Richard's Hound, that he's got a great story to go with it. I haven't heard the story yet, but I can't wait. In the movie, the scene is on a front porch after the funeral service with six or seven people sitting around playing. This is where people are start to realize Lindsey's character has real talent.
"Big Bull Rider"
Performed by Toby Keith
Writer: Toby Keith
This one was cut and recorded toward the end of the process after filming was done. It's just an attitude song that conveys the rawness of a true cowboy. That "just win" attitude. No excuses, just do what you do. It's about the excitement of the ride.
"Zig Zag Stop"
Performed by Toby Keith
Writers: Toby Keith/Randy Scruggs
For me, one of the most fun songs we recorded. Toby and I had written the music and he just started mumbling and throwing out phrases. It was almost like a rap or a ZZ Top kind of feel to it. You can see the dark sunglasses and smell the exhaust from the train. I don't think anyone would know it's Toby on vocals without reading the liner notes.
"Jacky Don Tucker (Play By The Rules Miss All The Fun)"
Performed by Toby Keith
Writers: Toby Keith/Chuck Cannon
This one's in a bar scene where Toby's character is kicking around, just having fun with his old friends. He's back in town, so they ask him to sit in with the band. It's about a guy who's always pushing the limits. There's a very cool vibe around this song.
