Country Music Legend

Quintessential Experiences: The Grand Ole Opry

Even if you're not a big fan of country music, you can't ignore the cultural significance of this venerable radio variety show, which has been beamed live from Nashville for almost 80 years. Today the syndicated show is broadcast internationally over numerous radio stations and television networks, but there's no better way to appreciate the Opry's inimitable spirit than to sit in the audience and share the experience with the thousands of devotees who turn up for every performance.

Grand Ole Opry performances take place Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m. (varying during the Ryman season) and Saturdays at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. Since 1974, the program has been based in a purpose-built 4,400-seat theater a few miles northeast of downtown Nashville, but every year the Opry returns to its previous downtown home, the Ryman Auditorium, for a winter run.

Prices range from about $32 to $50, and tickets should be booked well in advance, either by telephone (800-733-6779) or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Special rates are available for groups of 20 or more. Although it's ultimately up to the performer, you should bring your camera — this is one venue where fans are actually encouraged to take photos.
