January 5, 2007 — During the holiday season each year, Chely Wright takes time to help out her hometown community and those with special needs.

For the second consecutive year, Chely performed at an intimate acoustic concert to benefit the Topeka Association of Retarded Citizens (TARC), which provides services to infants, children, adults and seniors with developmental and related disabilities in Topeka, Kans. The show raised more $20,000 for the organization this year.

As a special surprise, the TARC unveiled site plans for a children's playground to be called "The Wright Place for Kids" in her honor. Construction on the playground will begin early this spring.

"This is an unexpected and deeply humbling honor," says Chely, who is also founder of the Reading, Writing & Rhythm Foundation. "I'm proud to be part of this community and their continued effort to improve it. Topeka is synonymous with 'community,' a place where citizens become caring neighbors and friends."
