February 13, 2007 Ty Herndon hopes to help children in Decatur, Ala. find the mentors and programs they need through the town's Boys and Girls Club. Ty, who grew up in Butler, Ala., and attended Austin High School in Decatur, will perform at a benefit for the club on May 1. "It takes a whole community to get behind something like this," Ty told the Daily Decatur. "Whether you like me or my music, you can support this cause, and I know you'll get something out of it."
Ty said his motivation to help kids comes from his experiences with addiction. He said his wake-up call came when his sister told him she was pregnant with his nephew. "This was someone who was going to need me," he said.
Ty has been sober three years, the same number of years he has been an uncle to his nephew. "I see him on a daily basis," he said. "We watch movies and "Sesame Street." We color and build trains. I can't imagine a child who doesn't have that. I know there are children who don't, and it shouldn't be that way."
"This thing called life is not always easy," he said. "You have to overcome your shortcomings, those character defects. I love to sing about the journey, and I hope people can recognize I've lived the life I sing about."
