March 1, 2007 — Kenny Rogers, who has had hits in five decades, was honored Tuesday night by the Country Radio Broadcasters with their Career Achievement Award for his major influence on the growth and success of country radio.

Billy Currington, a longtime fan of Kenny's, was on hand to perform his very first No. 1 hit, "Lucille," Dial-Global reports. Billy told the guest of honor, "Yours was the first concert I ever went to as a kid and the first cassette tape I ever bought."

Vince Gill closed the evening with one of Rogers" most memorable hits, "Sweet Music Man." Vince mentioned that songs tend to take a beating from people who insist on singing them without knowing the words. To illustrate his point, he recalled a true story about playing at a Los Angeles club on "talent night," when amateur singers sat in with the band. A Mexican gentleman wanted to sing "Japeeta," and when the band members said they knew no such song, the man said, "Sure you do. It goes, 'Japeeta fine time to leave me, Lucille.'"
