April 26, 2007 — Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood were part of the star-studded guest list on "American Idol" last night. The special episode of the show benefited relief programs for children and young people in extreme poverty in America and Africa.

Gary LeVox tells Dial-Global that Rascal Flatts was honored to be part of the show. "To be asked to do it and be onstage with Gwen Stefani and Quincy Jones and U2 — it's just an honor, and we were thrilled to death to do it. After doing it a couple of years ago [on "American Idol"], "Broken Road" has become such a part of the show, it's a just very humbling."

The show also featured a music video from Carrie's recent trip to South Africa. Her journey in early April was organized by "American Idol" and "Comic Relief," and during her two-day tour, she visited and played for schools, orphanages and hospices in and around Johannesburg.

Carrie says that it's not easy to talk about some of the things she saw in Africa — such as poverty, hunger and sickness — but she stresses that it's important for all of us to raise our awareness.

"It's something that nobody really likes to think about or talk about or look at," she says. "And I'm including myself in that, because nobody wants to think about children suffering. And nobody wants to think about children going hungry and dying from AIDS. You force yourself to look at and realize how they have it and how lucky we are. I think it'll make me appreciate my life so much more. And hopefully, we can make their lives better."
