July 12, 2007 Craig Morgan and his band were headed for a July 4th show at Ft. Dix, N. J., last week when they ran into a bit of trouble.
The wheel bearings on their equipment trailer failed about seven miles from the base. Since the concert was open to families and soldiers from the field, about 20,000 people were expected at the show.
Craig's road manager made several frantic phone calls, but couldn't find any help because of the holiday. Craig called the base to explain the problem and tell them they would be there as soon as possible.
The personnel at Ft. Dix quickly mobilized to help Craig, a former soldier, and within the hour had dispatched a unit from the Motor Pool. They unloaded the trailer and loaded all the equipment and instruments into their own transport truck and drove it to the base, ensuring that Craig and band were able to hit the stage on time. After the show they loaded the equipment back on the truck, took it to Craig's trailer and reloaded it.
"If we had been anywhere else in the world, we wouldn't have had that kind of help," Craig tells The Tennessean. "They were unbelievable. They acted like they were so proud to help us, and we were thanking them. They wouldn't even take a T-shirt."
The Motor Pool repaired the trailer the next morning under the supervision of the Sgt. Major of the base. Craig and his band and crew made it to their next gig in Uncasville, Conn., only an hour and a half before show time, but were able to set up and start their performance on time.
Morgan is currently on tour in support of his current CD, Little Bit of Life.
