July 24, 2007 Big & Rich are known for their humor and fun-loving lifestyle, but Big Kenny is serious about his commitment to bring awareness to the genocide in Darfur, The Tennessean reports.
"This is the first time in history that a genocide has happened, been called a genocide and we know it's going on, and we're not stopping it," he says. It's like we're watching this horrific happening on TV and the Web and we're not ending it. I think the thing that's going to ultimately end it is when just regular people just rise up and say, 'Enough is enough and you don't throw babies in fires.' "
This year, Big Kenny has taken his involvement to a higher level. He will travel to Darfur this fall, he is arranging meetings with elected officials in Washington, D.C., and he recently sent a letter to the editor to newspapers across America, urging people to write to their elected officials and to get involved through savedarfur.org. Big & Rich have already performed at rallies in Washington and New York, and the duo is planning a rally in Nashville.
"Every day that goes by, thousands more die," Big Kenny says. "I just can't see how any person of conscience, anybody who is raised like we've been raised, as graciously and blessed as much as we have in this country, I can't see how we can sit by idly."
