August 15, 2007 Rodney Atkins remembers telling his parents as a kid that he wanted to be a singer someday, but he says he really never imagined his dream would become a reality.
Rodney started playing music in college to make some extra money. "I would just sit in the corner of a bar and play covers," he tells the Ashtabula, Ohio, Star Beacon. "I started playing writers' nights. It was the dream, but that seemed like all it was."
Rodney attributes his current success to the fact that his songs convey a message that fans can relate to. "It's following your heart and trying to find and sing the songs that are honestly you," he says. "I looked for songs I could stand behind and then by just divine intervention, you find them."
Rodney says the highlight of his tour is the adrenaline ride of playing live shows. "It's incredible when people come up to you and tell you how your song affected them," he says. "That's what keeps you going. You feel like you're making a difference."
As his musical career starts to soar, Rodney says he looks toward country superstars such as Alan Jackson for direction. "What he does is what you want to become," he says.
