The Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas, Donny Broughton, presented Neal McCoy with the W.B. and Brandon Carrell Humanitarian Award.
December 12, 2007 The Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas honored Neal McCoy with the W. B. and Brandon Carrell Humanitarian Award, the highest award given to a non-Mason, on Dec. 6.
Past recipients include First Lady Laura Bush, Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry, WWII hero Rear Admiral Robert E. Dixon and Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.
The award is given to non-Masons who have significantly contributed to humanitarian causes on behalf of more than 100,000 Texas Masons. Named in honor of Dr. W. B. Carrell and his son, Dr. Brandon Carrell, who both served as Chief-of-Staff at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, the award parallels the Grand Lodge's Sam Houston Medal, which is presented to Masons who have distinguished themselves in American society.
The award was presented by Donny Broughton, who had previously honored Neal with a Community Builders Award, recognizing the positive effects of Neal's East Texas Angel Network.
The East Texas Angel Network, founded in 1995 by Neal and his wife, Melinda, is a foundation established to enhance the lives of families in East Texas whose child or children may be suffering from a serious or life-threatening illness or disease. ETAN has now raised more than $4.5 million since its inception. In recognition of these contributions, Neal also received the Academy of Country Music's Home Depot Humanitarian Award and was named Country Radio Broadcasters' Artist Humanitarian of the Year.
