February 26, 2008 - The band Little Big Town has been around for a decade, but the band's name is even older.
The group featuring Jimi Westbrook, Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads Schlapman and Phillip Sweet felt it had a mix of influences, and it wanted to find the right name to convey that. They were made aware of a CD of music that had been published by a Nashville company called the Little Big Town Music Group. The firm had owned the copyrights to a number of hit country songs, including Neal McCoy's "Wink," George Strait's "Blue Clear Sky" and Waylon Jennings' "Wrong." The band located the company's former owner, who had sold the firm, and he told them they were free to use the name Little Big Town if they wanted.
It was perfect in conveying a "small-town feel with maybe a big musical sound," Jimi told The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.
Little Big Town claimed the Academy of Country Music award for Top New Duo or Vocal Group in 2006, and they've gotten high marks for blending the sound of such country acts as Alabama and Restless Heart with the pop style of such bands as Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles.
The fact that they bridge genres is well-timed, given the wide-ranging sounds that many people program onto their iPods or their CD jukeboxes.
"I think," Jimi said, "this band is kind of the way the world is today about music."
