April 29, 2008 - Rich Fagan, a colorful Nashville songwriter who's authored hits for John Michael Montgomery, Clay Walker and Mel McDaniel, was jailed over the weekend and charged with the stabbing death of a business associate, the father of former "Saturday Night Live" comedian Cheri Oteri.
Fagan co-owned a publishing company with Tom Oteri and had achieved a fair amount of success writing such hits as Clay's "Only On Days That End In 'Y'," Mel's "Real Good Feel Good Song" and Moe Bandy's "Americana." Rich found his biggest success writing hits for John Michael, including "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)," "I Miss You A Little" and "Be My Baby Tonight."
According to WKRN-TV, Fagan and Oteri got into a fight, and Fagan pulled a pocket knife. The Tennessean reported Fagan was arrested on a drunk driving charge and that he called a friend from the police station and asked that someone drop by the house to check on Oteri. He was found dead, having bled significantly from a slit wrist.
Fagan has been charged with criminal homicide in the case.
