May 27, 2008 Country Music Hall of Fame act Alabama gets a permanent honor in its hometown when the city of Fort Payne unveils bronze statues at City Park on June 7.
Sandstone, limestone and Fort Payne bricks are being used to lay the foundation for the statues of Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, Jeff Cook and Mark Herndon at the corner of Gault Avenue and Fourth Street N.E.
"Were extremely proud that their home has been in Alabama," Fort Payne City Council President Johnny Eberhart told The Fort Payne Times-Journal. "We wanted to carve that pride in stone."
The group has reportedly sold more than 73 million albums and received Artist of the Decade honors from the Academy of Country Music at the close of the 1980s. The band officially retired with a farewell tour that came to a close in October 2004. Thirteen months later, Alabama was added to the Hall of Fame during the annual Country Music Association Awards show.
The public is invited to the unveiling, which takes place at 11 a.m.
