July 21, 2006--Joe Nichols got a rare opportunity recently when the entertainment editor of Maxim magazine asked him to pose in a fashion spread for the publication. The deal was sweetened when Joe was told he could also invite his musical hero to join him in the photo. Joe jumped at the chance to meet one of his greatest influences, Gene Watson, and invited the legendary performer to come to Nashville and be a part of Maxim's "Fashion-Country Style" piece.
"When it comes to fashion, I'm a pretty easy to please guy--jeans and a t-shirt is my daily style," Joe explains. "But I have to admit I do like to try out new things every now and then. What really sealed the deal for me though was the theme of this fashion shoot-- new artists and their heroes. I have been a fan of Gene Watson's practically all of my life, and to get to have the opportunity to meet a man that influenced my music and me so heavily--well, it was an opportunity I just had to grab. He was everything I thought he would be-- a real gentleman, and lots of fun to spend the afternoon with."
Joe and Gene took over Lawrence Record Shop on Lower Broadway in Nashville and between signing autographs for astounded patrons, put their best fashion foot forward for the magazine. The results can be seen in the August issue, on stands now. Joe has recorded a couple of Gene's songs, including "Should I Go Home (Or Should I Go Crazy)," found on his current CD, III.
