February 15, 2007 Despite having a laundry list of hits already under his belt, Clay Walker says he still has to prove himself with every new song he releases. Clay tells Dial-Global that the challenge of remaining a top country music star is similar to playing professional football.
"It's like an NFL quarterback," he says. "It doesn't matter if you're Brett Favre or Peyton Manning, you still have to go out every week. And when you lose a game it's kind of like if one of your records doesn't make it to the top of the charts. You're like, 'That doesn't feel good. I never want that to happen again. What can I do to keep that from happening?' Every song is a new game, and you have to go put on the uniform and go play."
Last week Clay participated for the 10th consecutive year in the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, competing with celebrities including Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish, Clint Eastwood, Kevin Costner, Emmitt Smith, and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Clay won the tournament's celebrity shootout with playing partner Bill Murray in 2005.
