March 9, 2007 — Vince Gill recently told the Binghamton, N.Y., Press & Sun Bulletin that he thinks the Dixie Chicks' Grammys were well deserved.

"Regardless of the controversy, they made a great record," he said. "You can analyze this thing into dirt, but at the end of the day, they're a great act with great songs. To me, you look like a fool arguing they don't deserve it."

The lingering controversy between the Chicks and Nashville is regrettable because neither side seems willing to bend or forgive, he said.

Vince said that he doesn't know if he's as big a player commercially as he once was, but that doesn't seem to bother him. "I've always approached things from a musical mindset, rather then being a country star or a pop star," he said, citing that as one reason for his longevity.

As for the country music scene today, Vince said his only complaint is that not a lot of traditional stuff is being done. "I'm not saying you shouldn't be contemporary, but not at the expense of our foundation," he said.

Vince said he still likes to play live, but acknowledged that it gets harder and harder to leave his wife, Amy Grant, and their young daughter for the road. He has to leave behind his golf game too. "Everywhere we've been playing it's been cold," he said. "I haven't been playing a lot of golf."
