May 9, 2007 When Jake Owen visited a Nashville karaoke bar last week, he was expecting to be entertained, but he left with a new understanding of how music can affect people's lives.
Jake was sitting down enjoying the performances when a young man got up and started singing Jake's current single "Startin' with Me." At first Jake thought it was a joke, but he soon realized that the gentleman didn't know he was in the bar and was singing the song with all his heart. After the performance Jake introduced himself to the young man, who told him he had just returned from service in Iraq and that his wife had recently left him.
The young man, who was overwhelmed by meeting Jake, said when he heard "Startin' with Me" on the radio, he immediately connected with the song and its message. "You don't know how much that song has meant to me in my life," he said.
"It was the coolest experience," Jake said. "I never expected that a song I wrote would impact others as much as 'Startin' with Me' has, or that a song I wrote would be included on a karaoke list and performed."
"Startin' with Me" is currently in the Top 20 on the country charts and continues to climb. Tomorrow Jake will begin his opening gig on the 2007 Alan Jackson/Brooks & Dunn Tour in Virginia Beach; the tour runs through October.
