June 5, 2007 — Chances are pretty good that Hartford, S.D. West Central High School’s Class of 2007 will remember one of the people who attended their commencement ceremony. The Sioux City Journal reports that Garth Brooks surprised Kelsey Hoffman when he came to watch her graduate Saturday.
Kelsey, who is battling cancer, met Garth in 2000 through the Make-a-Wish Foundation. The two have stayed in touch but she said she was surprised to see him at her commencement.
"Then I walked around the corner and Garth was there, and it was really exciting," she said. "I mean, I was like ecstatic. I think my heart dropped five floors when I saw he was in there. I started crying; it was pretty cool."
Garth said he understands that Kelsey has been through a lot. "They say God only gives you what you can handle," he said. "Well, he thinks she can handle a lot, and I'm glad he doesn't think I can handle much."
