June 11, 2007 Montgomery Gentry's Troy Gentry issued a public apology Friday to Metro police officer Robert McNaron for responding poorly to the officer's request that he move his autograph line out of the street, The Tennessean reports.
When Montgomery Gentry walked onstage at the CMA Music Festival's nightly news conference at LP Field, Troy immediately offered the apology before any questions were asked.
"The officer was down there trying to do his duty and I reacted in a poor manner," he said. "For that, I am here to apologize to him and say I am sorry for the way I reacted."
On Thursday, Troy began signing autographs after fans spotted him walking downtown. The crowd soon grew to about 400 and spilled into the street, blocking traffic. Two police officers were dispatched to get the traffic flowing at Fifth Avenue North and Commerce. Police say McNaron twice asked Troy to move into an empty parking lot to get people out of the road, and Troy responded the second time with an expletive.
After the situation calmed down, Troy apologized and offered his hand to McNaron, who refused to shake it.
