October 1, 2007 On Friday night Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music held a a tribute for songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in honor of the 50th anniversary of three of their most famous compositions, "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie" and "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and of their first meeting with the Everly Brothers, who recorded 31 of the couple's songs.
The couple penned more than 6,000 songs during their careers, including "Rocky Top," "Love Hurts," "She Wears My Ring," "Bird Dog" and "Raining in My Heart." They were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and National Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Vince Gill, who sang the Bryants' 1949 hit "Country Boy" and was then joined by daughter Jenny on "All I Have to Do Is Dream" at the tribute, amused the audience by walking onstage when the introduction he expected from co-host Ralph Emery never came, The Tennessean reports.
"Thanks for that glorious introduction, Ralph," Vince quipped.
"It's not in the script," Ralph told him.
"It reminds me of 'Nashville Now,' " Vince replied, ribbing Ralph about his former show. The rest of the night, Vince sheepishly crept back out onstage, to the delight of the audience.
Felice and Boudleaux's son Dane said the evening "is like being in the bedroom at 10 o'clock and hearing Mama and Daddy downstairs working. It's fun to be sharing these songs again with people."
