December 12, 2007 — Two-time Dancing with the Stars winner Julianne Hough has signed a record deal with Universal Music Group and is expected to release a country single in early 2008.

Julianne, 19, will be on the company's Mercury Records label and is scheduled to begin recording the album in Nashville early next month with producer David Malloy.

Julianne has been singing, dancing and acting since she was a child. At 10, she moved to London and studied acting and singing at a performing arts school and returned to the U.S. five years later. "I've grown up in a house full of country music," Julianne tells The Tennessean. "I've always wanted to do country music."

She moved to Los Angeles last year with $2,000 and took dancing gigs to pay the bills. "I really didn't have any connections with singing or acting," she says, "and that's why I moved out there, to sing."

Julianne almost didn't take the job on the ABC show for fear it would make people skeptical of her singing efforts. "I almost didn't do it because I've wanted to sing and act more than I wanted to dance," she says. "I want people to take me seriously as a singer. I have a different sound that will hopefully set me apart from other people."

She released a country single, "Will You Dance With Me," on iTunes in May.
