January 17, 2008 Many of Nashville's most successful songwriters keep notepads of their ideas, or they carry tape recorders to capture a melodic idea before it disappears. That's not the case for Carrie Underwood. If she's not in the middle of a songwriting period, she's able to put it on the backburner.
"I have to be in a mode," she tells Dial-Global. "I have to sit down and [say], 'This is what I'm going to do today.' I'm more of that kind of person, and I am [that way] with everything that I do, whether it's, 'Today I'm going to record,' that's all I can think about that day. Or 'Today I'm going to clean my house,' that's all that I can think about that day. And I have set days to do that. So I find it hard just to write everywhere I go. I'm not very good at that."
Carrie's method seems to work just fine. She co-wrote her hit "So Small," which took her to No. 1 in the final months of 2007. She also co-wrote her current single, "All-American Girl," which is currently in the Top 15 on the Mediabase Country Singles chart.
