March 4, 2008 - A Conway Twitty theatrical piece has -- to quote a Conway song title -- "never been this far before."
It's Only Make Believe, a musical that tells the late singer's story through the eyes of his children, is being put together by director Randy Johnson for a U.S. tour. The production features both his beginnings as a rock 'n' roll icon and his long-running status as one of country music's most influential singers.
"Conway Twitty is an American musical legend and, at the same time, a loving family man who never forgot his humble beginnings," Randy says. "That is the truth, and that is the musical I have created."
The production is expected to appear at venues of various sizes, including performing-arts centers, theaters and state fairs.
Conway's children, meanwhile, have filed suit against Sony/ATV, the publishing company that represents the songs Conway wrote during his lifetime, including "Hello Darlin'," "It's Only Make Believe" and "You've Never Been This Far Before." According to The Tennessean, the Twitty kids claim they did not understand the publishing agreement their father made when he sold his copyrights in March 1990.
