April 1, 2008 - Kathy Mattea's new album "Coal" arrives today in what turns out to be a rather appropriate release date. After all, it's April Fool's Day, and Kathy's CD is on the funny-sounding label, Captain Potato Records.

In reality, Captain Potato is Kathy's own label, and "Coal" is the first album she's made under that imprint, which is part of an inside joke.

"If you say my name over and over again, and you start to say it faster and faster and faster, and you keep repeating it, and you have a couple beers in there somewhere, you'll eventually get Captain Potato," she laughs. "It's been with me for years. [My former producer] Allen Reynolds, I used to come walking in the studio and he'd say, 'Good morning, mon capitaine.' And it's been bastardized in a million different [ways] — capitano patata, that's the Italian version — but it's been a running joke amongst everyone I've ever known for years."

"Coal" was produced by fellow artist Marty Stuart. It pulls together a series of songs that provide a portrait of the West Virginia coal-mining region in which Kathy was born.
