April 22, 2008 - Steve Wariner has stayed out of the limelight in recent years - by choice, preferring to write and record material at his own pace at his home studio. But he'll likely get plenty of attention when Brad Paisley completes his instrumental album, which will feature Steve in several roles.
For one thing, Steve is among six artists expected to trade guitar licks on the track "Cluster Pluck," which is already causing Steve some humorous enunciation issues. When he mistakenly called it "Cluster Puck," several people near him turned their heads, startled as if he'd said something offensive.
Steve met Brad when Paisley was only 13 or 14 years old — even younger than the 17-year-old version of himself Brad referenced in "Letter To Me" — and Steve became something of a mentor to Brad. Just last week, they wrote a song for Brad's album that might end up as a guest vocal project. Brad previously announced that he would be including a track featuring vocals from the late Buck Owens.
"He's smart," Steve said, "to do part instrumentals but also sing a few."
With Steve in particular, there's a precedent for success. When fiddler Mark O'Connor released his album The New Nashville Cats in 1990, three of the tracks featured vocal guests. One of them, "Restless," featured Steve, Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs, and it went on to win a Grammy award.
