June 25, 2008 — Many country artists live with some sort of nagging fear: Will they ever have another hit? Will the fans stop showing up? Will they dry up as a songwriter?

Jason Michael Carroll admits he has some fears about the business, but his biggest has nothing to do with Music Row.

"My ultimate fear has to do with the kids," he told The Beaumont Enterprise. "I don't want them resenting me when they grow up. All of this [success] can go away, but it's really important that my kids know I tried to make a good life for them and be a good dad. My kids will know I worked my tail off to provide a better life for them."

As it is, Jason has to work his tail off just to see his four children, aged 2-7. They still live in North Carolina with his ex-wife, so in addition to moving city-to-city when he’s on tour, he splits his time at home between Nashville and the Tarheel State.

"Being close to my kids is more important" than music, he said. "If my ex-wife would move to Nashville, it would save me a lot of money!"

Jason will be in yet another state, Wisconsin, by the time the weekend rolls around. The five-day Country USA festival begins today in Oshkosh with a show headlined by Sugarland. Jason’s slated to appear on Friday in a lineup that also features Kenny Chesney, Terri Clark and Jake Owen. Other headliners during the festival include Dierks Bentley, on Thursday; Brooks & Dunn, Saturday; and George Jones, Sunday.
