July 3, 2008 — Craig Morgan spent 10 years on active duty in the Army, and he was part of the force that descended on Panama when U.S. troops launched Operation Just Cause in December 1989. Given that he fought for his country, it’s no surprise that Craig feels a deep amount of patriotism, and on the Fourth of July weekend, he’s particularly proud of his homeland’s symbolism.

"America is freedom, more so than any other word," he told the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville. "When you hear France, when you hear Spain, when you hear Italy, Iraq, Afghanistan, you don’t think freedom. And I don’t care what part of the world you’re in, when you hear the United States of America, you think freedom. On the Fourth of July, when the fireworks are going off and the flags are being flown, that’s the one thing that I think of, is freedom and how great this nation is and how fortunate we as a people are to celebrate that freedom. And we have a huge group of people to thank for that, and that’s the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present. No other country shares that like we do."

Craig’s put his belief in the military — and some of the skills he learned as a paratrooper — into action. He’s performed in Afghanistan and Iraq on USO tours for American soldiers, he’s appeared in a concert to raise funds for the USO, and he’s been a co-grand marshal of Nashville’s Veterans Day Parade. And he accompanied Darryl Worley the first time Darryl went skydiving.
