July 18, 2008 — Randy Travis is one of the fittest stars in country music — not just currently, but one of the fittest who ever made a living by singing in the genre.

There’s a good reason for that: He’s committed to his workouts. He goes to the gym for an hour or more six days a week, and he’s kept up that regimen for more than 30 years, he told Lorianne Crook during tapings for GAC’s CMA Celebrity Close Up.

But Randy’s made some changes in his program, mostly because some of his exercises created damage.

A good example: karate. He used to engage in that sport with steel player Gary Carter on the road three times a week.

"We were beatin’ the hell out of each other," Randy laughed.

He had excellent reasons for stopping: "My nose has been rebuilt three times," he laughed. "You get tired of that."

Randy also said adios to running.

"Sometimes I would finish a workout and my knees would feel numb," he recalled. "I figured that’s not good."

Randy’s installment of CMA Celebrity Close Up premieres on GAC at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday. The episode also features Gretchen Wilson and Taylor Swift. Click here to watch a sneak peek!
