Charlie Daniels Exactly Where He Wants to Be

Aug. 18, 2008 — Earlier this year, Charlie Daniels was honored in Nashville for 50 years in music. The party was perhaps just a little late; he actually started touring with a small band in 1955 — 53 years ago.

While Charlie’s careeer has been marked by a few major moments, such as hitting No. 1 with "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" or joining the Grand Ole Opry, he sees it more as a series of small increments.

"Usually any kind of success is not really measured in leaps and bounds," he said in the cover of story of this weekend’s American Profile newspaper supplement. "You don’t accomplish it all at one time, but little by little. My goal when I started was longevity in this business. I didn’t want to just stay a little while and go. I wanted to do what I do for a long time."

Charlie still performs about 100 shows annually. In fact, he just wrapped up this summer’s version of the Volunteer Jam — which included 38 Special and Shooter Jennings — on Friday in Alpharetta, Ga. He has no plans to slow down.

"For 23 hours every day, I don’t have a clue," he said. "But during the hour I’m onstage, I feel like I’m exactly where God meant for me to be."
