Sept. 4, 2008 Plenty of people head to Las Vegas hoping to become winners at the slot machines and the black-jack tables, but Jimmy Wayne became one simply by answering his phone.
Jimmy was in Vegas on Sunday to play "Do You Believe Me Now" during the Jerry Lewis telethon for muscular dystrophy, and while he was preparing, he got word that the song had gone to No. 1 on the national country charts.
"You feel like you just won something," Jimmy told The Tennessean. "All the stars lined up. This was such a team effort. I'm always thinking about it, how one little turn could have changed the course of everything."
The course was a rocky one. His first album came out five years ago, but label changes and mergers squelched his momentum. He ended up switching to a different record company and taking longer than he anticipated to make the album.
"It felt like 20 years," he reflected. "It was so painful. But seriously, a hit song cures the problem. The only thing it doesn't cure is the next hit. I used to say to myself, 'All I need is a song.' And I was right. Now the phone rings all the time."
