Sept. 5, 2008 More than $6 million is being doled out to charities in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas, thanks in part to the run of concerts Garth Brooks gave last January to help out people who were affected by a series of devastating wildfires.
Garth performed five shows in two days at the Staples Center in L.A., with one of them aired by CBS as a one-hour special. Trisha Yearwood and Huey Lewis both made guest appearances, with all the money raised funneled to the McCormick Foundation for distribution.
The foundation also took in funds from several other companies and agencies and has earmarked 29 different recipients in Southern California. Several fire departments will be able to acquire new equipment, a variety of agencies will be assisted in rebuilding homes, and numerous relief organizations will have support programs that offer food and clothing bolstered. Some $1.8 million is being given out in the L.A. area, while $4.2 million in grants is being awarded in San Diego.
