Oct. 14, 2008 — When the presidential debate hit Nashville’s Belmont University last week, Republican candidate John McCain was literally just blocks away from the recording studios where Hank Williams Jr. cut some of the biggest hits of his career.

On Monday, Bocephus got even closer to McCain and VP hopeful Sarah Palin, hitting the campaign trail for a pair of rallies in Richmond and Virginia Beach. The "Born To Boogie" singer wafted a rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and in both locations, he served up a revised version of his classic "Family Tradition."

The latter song rebelliously celebrates alcohol and marijuana, though Hank replaced some of the lyrics to pay homage to the GOP ticket, ABC News reported.

The new version saluted McCain-Palin: "They’re not gonna blink. They’re gonna fix this country cause they’re just like you and old Hank."

The song also poked fun at the "left-wing liberal media" and referred to Sarah as a "mama bear in Idaho," adding, "How can you be so smart and be such a good lookin’ dish?"

No one asked Bocephus who he was voting for — probably wasn’t necessary.
