Alan, Willie, Freddy Appear On "W." Soundtrack

Freddy Fender

Oct. 15, 2008 — When Freddy Fender received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, it came in part after then-Texas Governor George W. Bush sent a letter to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce saying the Tex-Mex singer was "most deserving" of the recognition.

That puts a unique spin on the soundtrack to the Oliver Stone movie W. as the late singer’s "Wasted Days And Wasted Nights" joins music by Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, among others, in providing a sonic undercurrent to the life story of a beleaguered president now in his final days.

The album, released on Tuesday, features a significant amount of music with Lone Star State roots. In addition to Texan natives Freddy and Willie, Tioga-born Gene Autry appears on the disc with his version of "Deep In The Heart Of Texas," while Mitch Miller’s pop hit "Yellow Rose Of Texas" is also included. Late Texan Roy Orbison is also a part of the CD with his song "Claudette."

The movie, featuring Josh Brolin as the president and Richard Dreyfuss as Vice President Dick Cheney, debuts in theaters on Friday.

The W. soundtrack includes:
• Paul Cantelon, "War Introduction" From The W. Original Film Score
• Collegians Male Chorus, "The Whiffenpoof Song"
• Roy Orbison, "Claudette"
• Alan Jackson, "Chattahoochee"
