Nov. 13, 2008 — Kenny Chesney closed Wednesday’s "The 42nd Annual CMA Awards" the same way he’s ended three previous editions of the show: taking home the organization’s Entertainer of the Year award.

Kenny, after flirting with surprise guest Shania Twain, was a mix of emotions during his short acceptance speech, choked up at moments, giggly at others.

It was a significant moment. Kenny joined Garth Brooks as the only artists in history to win the CMA’s top honor four times, and the night’s importance was not lost on him.

"It’s a lot more than this kid ever dreamed of," Kenny said backstage. "I didn’t know that my life was gonna be like this. I was happy when I got my first Top 5 record. I was very, very happy just to get a tour bus and tour around with my buddies."

Three artists were double winners during the evening. Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles earned Song of the Year for writing "Stay," while the act also claimed Vocal Duo. George Strait’s Troubadour captured Album of the Year, and the project’s "I Saw God Today" also nabbed Single. And Brad Paisley, who co-hosted the ABC telecast with Female Vocalist winner Carrie Underwood, repeated as Male Vocalist and secured Music Video for "Waitin’ On A Woman."
