Jan. 12, 2009 — Former Alabama vocalist Randy Owen ran into a potential disaster last week when tornado warnings interrupted some promotional work in his hometown of Fort Payne, Alabama.

Randy was working with People magazine on a photo shoot when tornado sirens went off. Randy, the photographer and crew — nine people in total — headed back to Randy’s farm and watched the news unfold on TV. Ultimately, Randy decided it was time to go down to the basement, and everyone rode out the weather in safety over the next 30 minutes. Fortunately, no twisters touched down, and Fort Payne was spared.

In the meantime, the crew got a good look at the surroundings in which Randy’s values were formed. The town is not quite the swanky location in which People often operates.

"I'm a very simple person," Randy told the Associated Press. "I don't live a complicated life, at least I don't think it's complicated. I like to have love around me and good friends and family, and I'm an outdoorsman, I'm a farm kid, a rancher. That's who I am."
