March 26, 2009 Jo Dee Messina and Lady Antebellum are taking public actions to call attention to environmental issues, but theyre hardly alone in their efforts.
Jo Dee and Big Kenny have lent their names to Earth Hour, an energy-saving initiative that comes up this Saturday, while Lady A is trying to cut down the use of plastic. And Travis Tritt has an Earth Day performance on his calendar.
On behalf of Mother Nature:
Jo Dee will join Nashville Mayor Karl Dean to turn out the lights in Music City for a full hour at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The skyline will go dark, and theyre asking all the citys residents to turn off non-essential lighting as part of an Earth Hour demonstration about cutting down energy waste. "Earth Hour will be going on in every time zone throughout the entire planet, so my site will be dark for 24 hours," Jo Dee says. "When it comes to the environment, we all play a part, and its up to all of us to take action. Thats why Earth Hour is such a great campaign. It lets something as simple as flicking a light switch become so much more. Earth Hour reminds everyone that if we all put in a little effort, we can achieve big results." Big Kenny has also taken part in an Earth Hour PSA, People reports, singing "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and turning off his lights.
Lady Antebellums Earth Hour participation includes joining the Brita FilterForGood campaign, encouraging fans to cut their use of disposable water bottles, which pack land fills with plastic. "The message of our new video for 'I Run To You' is about paying it forward and being there for others when they need you," band member Hillary Scott says. "We are going to try and make small lifestyle changes now to pay it forward for people younger than us, like my little sister, so that they have a clean, healthy and safe environment to enjoy years from now."
Travis Tritt will play a free concert in Austin April 20, one of 10 Green Apple Thank You concerts in various cities recognizing Earth Day (a separate event from Earth Hour). The shows are part of an eco-friendly initiative affiliated with PlanetGreen.com, according to Billboard. In conjunction, an Earth Day On The Mall show will be held April 19 in Washington, D.C. Performers for that event have yet to be named.
