Trace Adkins: Thumbs Down to "Idol"

April 1, 2009 — "American Idol" has earned plenty of attention from country stars since its inception: Reba McEntire and Brad Paisley have performed on "Idol" shows; former winner Carrie Underwood has returned several times; and Martina McBride, Dolly Parton and Randy Travis have all served as mentors.

So would Trace Adkins, whose appearance on "The Celebrity Apprentice" makes him a reality-series veteran, be interested in mentoring contestants on "Idol"?

"No, not really," he told NASCAR.com. "I never have been a fan of those talent shows to be honest with you. You can win a talent show because you're the best singer, but then what? What else you got for me? You got a story? You got any character, any soul? What else you got? You got nothing. You're 14 and you can sing good, but that's not going to make it for me. My kids like that, but I don't. I need something a little more substantial, I'm afraid."

Trace has, however, held out the possibility that he might make a return appearance in the current season of "Apprentice." In the meantime, look for him Sunday at the "44th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards", where he’ll perform "Til The Last Shot’s Fired" with the West Point Glee Club. Other acts in the CBS telecast (8 p.m. ET) include Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Sugarland, Jamey Johnson and Rascal Flatts.
