Kenny Rogers' "Found" Songs That Made a Career

"I've always said that I'm not a particularly great singer, but I've always been great at finding songs." That is a bit of an understatement from Kenny Rogers, the only artist in recorded music to chart a record in each of the last six decades, from the 1950s to the 2000s.

He's sold more than 105 million albums worldwide courtesy of such American anthems as "The Gambler," "Lucille," "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" and "Lady," yet the 67-year-old is not about to rest on his laurels. He'll soon release "Water & Bridges," but that's not all he's up to.

He recently spent some time on Great American's Country's GAC Nights talking about his recent activities, both on and off the stage.

For example, he's now the proud father of 18-months-old identical twin boys, Justin and Jordan. "It was not what I had planned on at my age, but it's been the greatest gift," Rogers says. "It's much more enjoyable than I'd thought."

The Texas-born Rogers has always pursued a variety of interests beyond music. As an actor, his "Gambler" franchise spawned five movies and a five-episode mini-series, the longest-running mini-series in American TV history. Additionally, he's written four books of fiction and non-fiction, published three books of photography and he's chairman of his own Dreamcatcher Entertainment.

"Artists cannot run labels," he says when asked about putting together a talented team to run the Dreamcatcher label. "Those who do better have able managers. I learned a long time ago to never put my own money into my own career."

Since starting his independent label, Rogers has achieved hits with cuts like "The Greatest" and "Buy Me A Rose." The latter made him the oldest artist in all genres of music — in the history of the Billboard trade charts — to reach the No. 1 slot. He also continues to make music videos and his most recent, "I Can't Unlove You," features 22-year-old son, Christopher who is studying acting. "Interesting thing is, he's really good," the proud father notes.

In the end, it's still touring and performing that Rogers enjoys most. "I love performing and I like to have something fresh to sing. I love doing the hits, but I like working new songs in there too. If you like songs that reflect on life and have a little wisdom in them, then I can reach you."

This week's GACtv.com Country Q & A comes from Rob in Monroe, Mich.:

Q: We haven't heard anything from The Wilkinsons for a while. Anything in the works?

A: For the last two or three years the Wilkinsons (Steve, Tyler and Amanda) have continued their career as a family act in Canada, while Tyler and Amanda pursued solo careers. So far the solo careers have not taken off, but the family wisely kept recording and touring North of the border. Their latest release was an independent CD last year called "Highway."
