Blake Shelton Makes a Video: Don't Make Me
Just in time for the highly anticipated arrival of Blake Shelton's fourth album, "Pure BS," GAC presents behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the video for his hit single, "Don't Make Me."
"'Don't Make Me' was one of those things that when everyone heard it, it was unanimous that it was a special song and kind of a new sound for me," says Shelton. "It's about a guy who is going through a lot of struggles and is not sure how to handle it. That's been me in the last year and a half. I've been kind of up in down in my personal life and a lot of that reflects in this song and the rest of the album."
Creating the "Don't Make Me" video was one of Shelton's biggest video productions to date. After receiving multiple concepts for the video, he teamed up with director Roman White to bring his chart-topping tune to life.
"If you get a really great song, it's easier to write a treatment because it evokes clear story and emotion," White recalls. "I really loved the song because it wasn't the normal [story of] a woman and man have a fight and they leave each other. It had a lot bigger story to it."
Under White's careful and creative eye, Shelton and co-star Austin Highsmith act out the storyline of a couple whose resulting emotions from a disagreement cause a rainstorm. The video concludes with an indefinite ending for the couple, which as it turns out, was intentionally planned by the director.
"At the very end of the video they come back to the same front door and you just don't know what's going to happen. I pretty much just set myself up for a sequel so they have to use me again," White jokes.
"Artists use music videos to deliver a visual interpretation of their songs for fans," says Sarah Trahern, senior vice president of programming for GAC. "This project with Blake lets GAC viewers experience the creative process that goes into making a music video concept into a reality."
